I’ve always kinda wondered about 404 errors. Whether they are important to keep up with, how they affect SEO on a blog and the best way to handle them. It’s one of those things that I always put off since they didn’t seem to be making much difference.

At least that’s what I thought, but I was wrong!!

So I’ve been doing some research and experimenting lately. And finally came up with a very simple solution to redirect 404 errors to any page of your wordpress blog.

I’m going to show you a little piece of code for a 301 redirect that is even simpler than installing a WP plugin, and works like a charm.

This is why I started to care about 404 errors

I was checking out my Google Webmaster tools the other day, and I saw the amount of crawl errors on my blog. Let’s just say it was enough to make me freak out, just a little. I had several links that were leading to 404 errors. And the worst part was, many of them were from months ago.

Also, I am currently going back and SEO optimizing my blogs to the fullest and consolidating my categories to make life easier for my visitors. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do, but was worried about having a bunch of dead links.

So I knew I needed to get on top of this, and figure out a solution that not even a non-techie (me) could handle by their self.

WordPress plugins?

There are several WP plugins that handle 404 errors and can redirect them. But I just wasn’t satisfied with any of them. Plus I like to figure things out on my own and at least experiment. Some of the plugins were too complicated for what I wanted, and others were messing up my theme.

I love plugins, don’t get me wrong. But you don’t want to go and install as many as you can. Too many WordPress plugins can slow down your site. And some of them, might not play nicely with each other, or with your theme. So I started experimenting with the coding, and found exactly what I wanted.

How do 404 errors hurt your blog?

First off, if you don’t have too many 404 errors, then you’ll probably be fine. But still, it’s worth taking caring of them when you see them.

Let me explain why.

When someone clicks on a link that no longer exists or maybe spelled incorrectly, they’ll be lead to your 404 error page. Almost all WordPress themes have them, and usually it’s a plain page that says

404 error – this page no longer exists

Unless someone changed it to something different.

1 – this causes not the best experience to the visitor and you could lose them forever. Now some 404 error pages might have other suggestions for them or other links to your site, and etc…. but there’s still something better for SEO purposes.

2 – Google and other search engine spiders will crawl and find these dead links. This creates the crawl errors that you’ll see in your Webmaster Tools. Now I’ve heard that your blog won’t get penalized too badly, or any at all for the 404 errors. But I think differently.

Instead of the spiders crawling links that lead to a 404 error page, they could be spending more time crawling your other content. Plus 404 e r r o r pages aren’t filled with content, that’s never a good thing. Makes sense to me at least.

You could block 404′s in the Robots.txt, but then they won’t know they exist and this could possibly create a different kind of error. This is what I’ve heard in forums. Never tried it before on my own so don’t know for sure. I’d rather redirect them.

3 – You’re losing link juice, opportunities to make more money and even loyal readers. On your site, all links pointing to other pages in your blog that no longer work -either because the link is misspelled, or the page no longer exists, are going to the 404 error page. Same thing goes for other blogs/sites that linked to yours, but leading to your 404 error page. That link juice is going to a page that you don’t care about and is being wasted.

You’re losing money and loyal readers because instead of leading them to a page that you want them to see, they are being lead to a blank 404 error page. Which doesn’t really help anyone out.

Finally, the 301 Redirect Code

First off, for those who don’t know already, a 301 redirect means it’s permanent. And yes, it passes link juice.

Now you need to go into your WordPress dashboard under appearance, then editor. You should see your blogs 404.php. If you don’t have one, then you’ll need to make one by going to your cpanel in your hosting and upload it to your blog’s files with a ftp.

There’s actually 2 different codes

Make sure you save a copy of the original 404.php page, just in case the codes below don’t work with your blog!!

#1 — This code below will redirect all of your 404 errors to your homepage. Just completely replace your 404.php with the code below.
————————————————————————————————————————
<?php

header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location: ".get_bloginfo('url'));

exit();

?>
————————————————————————————————————————-

#2 — This code will redirect your 404 error to any page that you enter in the blank url spot. Maybe a money page that you want to get ranked higher or whatever you choose.
————————————————————————————————————————-
<?php
header("Status: 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location:http://url");
?>
————————————————————————————————————————-

There you have it, you now have some options to redirect 404 errors to your homepage for a wordpress blog, or any other page that you desire even without using a plugin. It was actually really quite simple to do. And now you’re probably thinking, why did I wait so long?

Have any input on this matter? Then please don’t hesitate to share by leaving a comment. And if you found this post helpful, then do me a favor and share it with others by using one of the social buttons. I’d appreciate it.

The other day I was thinking about all the time, money and energy I have spent in the past to get quality backlinks to my sites and individual blog posts. SEO can become a huge Headache sometimes, especially if you don’t have too much extra time or any money to spend on it. But without backlinks, you’re site won’t ever reach it’s full potential. Or get much free traffic from the search engines, ever.

istockphoto

You write content for your blog, then you have to work on SEO and work on building back links for it. That’s a very tedious job for anyone to do by their self, day in and day out. And you’ll probably wind up giving up after a few months. If you think about it, that’s not a very efficient method at all.

Of course, when your first starting out, and have a very limited audience, you will need to put in some work to get the ball rolling, and to organically get backlinks to your new blog posts just like what Daniel had said when he had answered my question awhile back in this article.

It finally hit me though, that getting free passive backlinks continuously to your blog and posts, would just make more sense than having to go back yourself and working on them manually. That way, others would be continuously doing your back linking for you, and you can move on to something else.

Here’s the best methods that I could find and personally have done some experimenting with myself to get passive free backlinks to your blog.

Create Killer Content – I’ll admit, sometimes just to keep up with a consistent schedule of publishing a post every few days, I’ve written some very simple posts just to get something out there. But guess what, those posts probably scared more people away from my blog rather than helped the cause.

If you spend the time to actually create content that is very valuable to your readers, then not only will you get traffic by word of mouth, but you will also start getting backlinks from other bloggers pointing to your great content. Keep this up and you’ll soon have started the snowball effect, and you won’t really have to even worry about getting backlinks anymore.

Which is better? Writing a simple blog post and then spending hours on getting backlinks and traffic to it constantly. Also remember, you’ll continuously be getting only new readers to your blog not any loyal readers since you have low quality content. Or, taking a little more time to write stellar content and creating a loyal fan base that will eventually do the promoting of your posts for you. It’s your choice.

Link baits – These are usually very long and thorough posts that will be used as a continuous source for others to refer to. Such as lists and tutorial type of posts. I have a few of these on my site and they for sure brought in the most organic traffic and backlinks. The effort I put into these type of posts is definitely worth it. And I still to this day, get links pointed to them from other bloggers and even from many mentions on forums.

Social Media Buttons – This is probably the most passive way of getting backlinks and traffic to your blog. All you need to do, if you’re using WordPress, is to find a good social media plugin. And there’s a ton of good ones out there. Not only will you get backlinks from the social media sites, but also a lot of traffic.

Make sure there is a way for people to easily bookmark your site on the most popular social media sites, and you have one on every single of your blog posts. Like my blog, I have them to the left of every post. To many times I see newbies without these on their blog, and they probably are losing a lot of traffic and backlinks because of this. Remember, people are lazy, make it easy for them by being able to push a simple button to share your blog post.

Act Like an Expert – If you become known as one of the experts or authority figures in your niche, then people will more than likely link to your site as a reliable source for information on that particular topic. For instance, anyone who wants to start a blog or wants information about blogging, people link to and lead others to, Problogger.

Not everyone will be able to be as well known as Problogger. But like even myself, this blog still gets links back from people that are new to blogging and internet marketing since I do know what I’m doing. And to some of them, I probably am seen as an somewhat of an expert. Even though I am far from being one.

Know what in the world you’re talking about on your niche. Do your research and experimenting before you even try to act like an expert in any niche, or this could have the reverse effect.

Give something away for free – Go grab yourself some free Master resell or Private Label Rights products and give it away for free. Make sure you also brand those products with your blog and even can throw in some affiliate links. Or just use your imagination. There’s a ton of FREE things you could give away.

You could create something of your own, a simple landing page, software, or even a really good ebook. You could even hold some type of contest. Giving something of value away for FREE will get a lot of attention and will have other bloggers linking to you. Many top experts use this method all the time.

Blog about the latest trends and hot topics – If you’re one of the first to blog about something new, or currently trending, then other bloggers will use your post as a source. Some will even link back to you. Chances are, if you’re one of the first to blog about something, then you’ll show up in the search engines much easier than waiting until 1000′s of other bloggers write about it too.

I once wrote an article about the Social Network Movie, and even though all the top sites on the internet also wrote about it, my post was in the top 5 listings on the first page of Google’s results for a good while. Just because I was the one of the first to write about it. This helped bring me new visitors, but also some new back links.

It might take a little more work and effort at first to implement the methods above. But after that, then the backlinks and traffic should be continuously coming to your site and blog posts on their own. Think how many free passive backlinks you could get if you did everything mentioned above on a consistent basis. You would become a force to be reckoned with in the Internet marketing world.

I believe it all begins and is built around great content that is so valuable, it will make people want to link to you and share your information. This is something I am going to be working on going forward. I know my writing skills are still pretty weak, but they are slowly getting better and better. You should see some of my first posts, an English teacher would freak out.

Got any other good methods that weren’t listed?

Lately I’ve been at a crossroads of whether to finally give up on my internet ventures all together or kick my butt back into high gear and do what I always had set out to accomplish online. Which is to become a highly successful internet entrepreneur with a passive online business, and then expand to other offline ventures.

But here’s the thing, you can’t ignore the cold hard fact that over 90% of anyone who gets into Internet Marketing will eventually give up or never see any success online. And right now, I’m a prime example of someone that’s going to become part of that statistic.

-cavin-

I haven’t ever really been super successful online, but I have made plenty of money on the internet. Hey, considering I’m a high school dropout and have very little tech, writing or design skills, -when I made my first dollar online, that was enough to give me the confidence that I could achieve anything online, and you can too!

But lately, I’ve been holding my own self back.

All of my sites are going downhill and honestly, it’s depressing. The past year or so I’ve been getting less traffic, even fewer sales, and no real growth at all. Even though the last couple of years of my life in general have probably been some of my roughest, (pity party anyone) you can never use excuses. If you really are committed to something and really want it, then nothing should stop you.

Moving Forward

Let’s face it, everyone might experience a slump sometimes, especially internet marketers. But are you really going to give up that easily and throw away an opportunity to become financially free and to work for yourself for the rest of your life?

Find a way to inspire yourself and raise your game. Do whatever it takes to get headed in the right direction, get yourself out of the funk, and take yourself to another level.

One thing that separates a successful business person from someone who isn’t, is the ability to acknowledge they are heading in the wrong direction and recognize what they need to change up. I don’t know about you, but I only want to be moving forward not backwards in anything I do, just like in the movie Limitless.

So, I’ve been doing some thinking, actually for a good while now about what in the heck is holding my internet business back. Of course, other than my own self.

And here’s what I’ve come up with:

Organized – My little home office was a total mess. Papers are everywhere, and my desk and computer is cluttered with all kinds of junk. When I first got into internet marketing, I always figured I’ll cleanup and organize tomorrow. No problem. But everything has just kept building up all over. I have no idea where half my things are or even know what I have. I’ve lost so much time, money and energy by not knowing what I even have or by having to look for things. This was my very first step.

Goals – You really do need to set goals, short term and long term. Give yourself something to strive for and to achieve. This is one of the best ways to keep moving forward and for growth. Reaching a goal gives you a sense of accomplishment and builds your confidence. When was the last time you hit a goal? How did you feel?

Short term goals could be hitting $100 a day from online sales in 6 months. Long term could be becoming a multi millionaire from your internet business in 10 years.

I actually had set some goals when I first started internet marketing, but they were to vague and frankly, I forgot about them. So I now have written specific goals and have them in a place where I can see them everyday.

Network – I’ll be honest, I’ve been lacking in this department. It takes a lot of time and effort on a daily basis to build up a strong social network. I really thought I could do it myself, and stay under the radar. But I’ve learned only the SEO and Paid Traffic geniuses out there can be successful being a lone wolf. And I sure ain’t one of them. At least, not right now.

Social media is the biggest thing ever right now and always will be. Nothing can beat word of mouth from people you know, right? Connections will come in handy for so many different reasons. So build those networks, and always get them contacts cause you never know when you just might need them. Even if you only meet someone or talk to someone just one short time. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

Everyone needs help, online connections, business partners and other like minded people to talk to. You’ll miss out on so many opportunities, information, traffic and so much more if you don’t start creating a large network.

Many successful internet entrepreneurs rely heavily and almost solely just by networking and social media. It’s really that powerful.

Schedule – If you don’t create a schedule, then it will greatly affect your productivity. It also helps keep you on track on moving forward to reaching your goals. Don’t just decide to work whenever you feel like it, or you’ll just end never working like I eventually did. Create a schedule: time of day you’re going to work, how many hours, and what you’ll work on at what times. Like do you’re writing in the morning, networking in the afternoon, other projects and emails at night. Whatever you think that might work, and you can always change it around.

Consistent – Here’s the BIG one, especially for us bloggers. Consistency is one of the hardest things to keep up, but you gotta do it. You’ve got to keep getting those posts out on a regular basis, and keep up with your networks and everything else that goes along with an internet business. Anyone can create a blog or website and do a little work to it for a week or even a few months, but that’s not really going to get you anywhere. The search engines, your business and your readers/customers love consistency. You’ll lose it all without it.

Accountable – Internet marketers can live the dot com lifestyle and do what they want when they want, right?

A BIG FAT, Wrong!! When you and me are making 6 figures off our sites, then we will have that luxury. Until then, you better be accountable to something or you’ll become as lazy as the biggest pot head on your block.

I worked hard as heck the first 6 months, and the past couple of years I really haven’t been doing much at all for my online business. Once my sites started making passive and residual income for me every month, I basically got lazy and thought it would last. Surprisingly, it did last for a good long while. But eventually the sales died off, and so was my little internet business.

Stay accountable to your schedule, goals and to your online business.

If you owned a Mcdonald’s, would you just not go in for months at a time or not care what was going on? Heck no, you would be on top of everything everyday and always be finding ways to help it flourish. Why wouldn’t you treat your internet business the same way?

You see, I already had the knowledge of all 6 things above, I just wasn’t implementing them. Better late then never, I guess. But only if I had done this at the very beginning of my online journey. You live and learn. Some of us (myself) just like taking the long way of doing things.

If you don’t want your internet business to start going downhill and eventually dying. Then first acknowledge it, and figure out what you need to do to change and get it headed back in the right direction, moving forward.

We all know there are bloggers who make a lot of money online. But how do they actually make their money?

What better way to find out than by reading a blog’s income report. Not only can they be inspiring but they can help give you ideas on what’s bringing in the money. You can even sometimes get detailed information on their actual stats like traffic and exact affiliate programs they promote.

Many of the blogs listed below are the most successful on the internet and are now usually pretty discreet on exactly how they make their money. But I’ve put together a nice little list and you’ll find some of my favorites below.

http://www.johnchow.com/blog-income-report-june-2008/

http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/756/make-money-blogging-september-report/

http://www.youngprepro.com/may-2011-report/

http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/my-income-reports/

http://www.viperchill.com/viperchill-13/

http://www.problogger.net/archives/2010/12/15/october-and-november-earnings-breakdown/

http://www.amitbhawani.com/blog/monthly-income-report-june-2010/

http://www.makemoneyontheinternet.com/july-2010-income-report/

http://zacjohnson.com/july-2008-blog-revenue-report/

http://machoarts.com/monthly-income-and-traffic-report-march-2011

Once you’ve broken it down there are 4 main ways bloggers are generating revenue from their sites.

coaching- Once you’ve hit the Big Time on the internet, then people will actually pay you $100′s per hour just for your advice. Who else can charge that amount without having a Masters or even a bachelors degree? Not many.

affiliate- This is the main way I and many others make money from blogging. Just add some affiliate links and some banners on your blog and watch the money roll in. OK, maybe it’s not quite that easy.

ad sales – Selling ad space on your blog is a surefire way to bring in some revenue. You can charge advertisers whatever you want for them to place their link or banner on your blog for a set amount of time. The more targeted traffic your blog gets, the more you can charge.

selling your own products/services – This is one of the best ways to significantly increase your blogs revenue and to spread your brand. Might take a little more work and money but the rewards can be even greater.

Of course, just because something works for one site might not work for yours. But why not checkout what’s working for one blog and see how they are actually making their money if they are giving up the information for all eyes to see.

Most of the super successful blogs stopped sharing detailed income reports on their blogs. While the others have learned how to make even more money from their blog just by sharing them.

Know any other blogs who post detailed income reports? Feel free to leave a comment and share it.

By now I’m sure you’ve heard about the Google Plus One Button. It’s been around for awhile, and there’s actually a few sites adding it to their list of other social media buttons.

But today is the very first time I’ve seen the Google +1 showing up next to the websites in the search results. Which must mean it’s finally in full effect and maybe we internet marketers should be taking it a little bit more seriously.

Google Plus One Video

Many people, including myself, first heard about the +1 button from Google awhile ago and really didn’t think it would catch on. Isn’t it just another Facebook Like button? Yeah, that’s really going to catch on, so we thought.

Why Should You Care About the Google Plus +1 Button?

I think Google really has something here. Think about it, Google is the King of the search engines and will be for a very long time. They are doing what Facebook is trying to do, currently. FB wants to turn into the next biggest search engine, but having social media affect the way we do our searches.

Example: Let’s say you’re searching for diners on Facebook, then the results will appear with your friends recommendations about the diners they like.

The Google Plus one button is a way for you to recommend a site and let others know it’s worth checking out. Your contacts and others will be able to see the Google +1 results and recommendations when they go to a web page, a website, and even when they do a Google search. But you will need to be logged into your Google profile to +1 a site that you see in the search results.

It’s really a great way to help filter the quality sites from the crappy sites. But scary for those of us marketers who are creating the crappy sites. Hmmmm… Even I might have a few of those laying around.

I don’t think good search rankings will be good enough anymore, you’ll need a site that’s actually beneficial that people want to recommend.

Anytime someone uses the Google Plus one button on your site, others will be able to see the results, which will also help your site to standout from the one’s that aren’t getting recommended. And rumors have it, that the more +1′s a site gets, may also have an SEO effect on it and help bump it’s rankings in the Google search results.

Google Plus One Button Code

It’s really easy to install on any website or blog, and the best location for it is of course near your other social media buttons. Though, I’ve seen many people add it to the bottom and even the top of their web pages too.

Just go here to get the Google Plus one code and complete directions on how to install it.

The Google Plus one is still fairly new and I think will really affect the way people do online searches with Google. The earlier you get in on this, the better. I’ll be installing this new button on all of my sites right away.

What do you think about the Google Plus one button?

Honestly, writing was one of the hardest things for me to do on a consistent basis.

When I first started internet marketing and blogging, writing came very easy for me, and I actually looked forward to write my next blog posts and content for my sites. After the fun and momentum of starting a new online venture wore off, the writing got harder, took longer, and I even started to experience writer’s block quite often.

I heard this cliche many times before from the so called experts, “if you’re writing about you’re passions, then you’ll always enjoy writing about it”. Well, it went something like that.

But later I found out they really didn’t know what they were talking about. I had done some research and learned that many, if not all the top writers in the world, experience writer’s block and need a little push now and then, too.

Got an Old Kitchen Timer?

I finally found a system, a technique, that started to work for me. Basically all you need to do is start using a timer and create a schedule for your writing. Not only will you become more efficient with your writing, but it will also help boost your productivity, greatly.

You’ll have to set your own time limits and schedule, but here’s the one I created for myself.

I write for a total of 4 hours a day, six days a week. That is the only time I can write, and that time is just for writing. I have a big timer right next to me and I set it for an hour, then I take a 15 minute break once it goes off. I do this 4 times per day.

This system helps me to not get burnt out from writing for long periods of time and helps me with my time management. Before I would force myself to write so much per day, no matter how long it would take me, even if it meant not getting to the other things I had planned for the day. With that kind of pressure, it lowered my quality and made writing a chore that I started to dread on a daily basis. Plus it was really starting to kill my productivity.

Mentally, I found having a timer in plain sight, helps me to challenge my writing skills and to become faster and better. Also, working in short bursts, helps keep me more focused and be more productive.

Does this type of writing technique work?

Well, it definitely works for me, but I actually got the idea from watching the “Top Super Geniuses” that work at places like Google and Facebook. Ever seen their software engineers (hackers) creating code? A lot of times they will have a timer right next to them and are only given a short amount of time to create something. This helps to push themselves and produces the best work possible in a set amount of time.

Here are some more variants of this same type of technique, below.

The Writer’s 3 Hour Work Day

One day I was reading this post on the Schwartz Copywriting System. It pretty much is a system that one of the top copywriters, Eugene Schwartz, created for himself to consistently produce brilliant content in only 3 hours a day. He never had writer’s block or faced self-doubt in front of his content.

His system pretty much worked the same as what I described above.

He set a kitchen timer for 33.33 minutes, and then would take a small break. He did this six times a day for five days per week. Which worked out to be a little over 3 hours of writing per day.

However, he would of course do extensive research on whatever he was writing about before actually sitting down to start writing.

And, he had setup a little list of rules that he had to follow once the timer was set and ticking.

For instance; he couldn’t get out of the chair for any reason or do anything else while in the chair.

He could however drink coffee, stare at the walls or window, or use the time for actually writing his content.

Since all the other options were pretty boring and unproductive, he usually always would use the time to write.

He eventually wrote nine books, a ton of successful ads and countless articles. He is still to this day, one of the most successful and top copy writer’s of all time.

The Pomodoro Technique

Here’s a complete site that basically has turned this into a lifestyle. The Pomodoro Technique was created by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980′s and now is practiced by many people around the world.

Basically they don’t only use a timer for writing, but use this same exact kind of system for any type of task or project at hand. Which isn’t a bad idea at all.

The Pomodoro Technique has you setting a timer for only 25 minutes and working on your task, then taking a small break once the timer rings.

As you can see, there are many different variations of this technique using a timer, out there.

Whatever you choose to do, creating a set schedule for your writing and using a timer is the best way to increase writing productivity and efficiency. It really does help you get the most out of time management and push yourself to do the best.

Have any other tips, techniques, tricks that help, when you write?
